Assessment:

Assessment consists of checking the movement in the affected muscle area and palpating the muscles for any irregularities. A brief medical history is recorded along with related matters such as activities, diet and past injuries. Feedback throughout the treatment is encouraged as it is important that you feel completely comfortable during the treatment. The myotherapist may also work in conjunction with your referring doctor to provide you with the best care.

Treatment:

Treatment may be preventative, corrective or rehabilitative. Most muscular conditions can usually be overcome in 3 to 4 treatments. Depending on the severity of the condition, there should be a marked improvement after only a couple of sessions. Maintenance treatments may also be required from time to time, ranging from a monthly basis to twice a year.

Myotherapy is an efficient and cost-effective method of therapy because treatment isn't ongoing.

Depending on the condition of the muscles and tendons, the myotherapist may use:

  • soft tissue manipulation through remedial massage and trigger point therapy,
  • thermal therapies to stimulate blood flow and reduce muscle contraction,
  • TENS therapy (transcutaneous electrical nerve and muscle stimulation) by applying a light current to electrically stimulate hard to reach muscles,
  • acupuncture needle techniques to reduce muscle contraction and alleviate pain,
  • passive muscle stretching where the therapist gently stretches contracted muscles through body positioning and movement,
  • corrective exercises and stretches for you to do at home.
